Poult had splayed / spraddle leg and I used a small hairband and a peice of straw for the middle . Today he is not doing that so I took it off.

But what he still does is put his legs straight back and lays on his belly.
He won't stand nor put his feet underneath him.

He has been in a small box away from the others and has been eating and drinking. And when I take him out, he lays on his belly and tries to run but just slides forward instead.

What is going on? :(

Also I notice he opens his mouth and makes air noises. He does chirp at times but especially when he drinks he looks like he is having a hard time getting the water down.
Idk..

Thanks everyone!!!

He is doing a tad better. I see one underneath now.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I do not really think your chick is going to make it. In my experience, when they lay out and gasp like that it is the sign of the end. I'm sorry. :( It really sounds like your little one had more wrong than splayed leg.
On the other hand, I could very well be wrong,, I have has chicks fool me before and turn out perfectly healthy birds. My only advise I can give you is to continue to make sure he is eating and drinking and make sure he is warm and comfy. Hopefuly things will work out and he will pull through.

:/ well I guess all I can do is hope for the best.

I put the rubberband around his feet again. And now he is actually improving! He finally walks! But still is wobbly a little. I think it's just going to take him a little longer to catch up.

I'll keep you updated.

Hi,
I have one who looks exactly like that. I will place in a box with others with nearby food/water. I was feeding pulverized crumble with egg yolk and water to hopefully gain strength. Did you do the rubber band/straw in middle hobble? Mine was born Friday on rubberized/textured mat so don't think it is from slippery surface.
Do you have any tips?

I just let him out to walk around during the day then put him back at night to get rest without the others picking on him.
I used vet tape today to try a different method and seems to work. He is still needing help. But will eat and drink on his own.
Mine was born on Friday too!

Just an update..

He is still tied up but with vet tape. He is doing so much better! He is running around and eating and drinking fine. I was going to take off the tape tomorrow to see how he does.

I am very glad you're little one is doing well. As it turns out, it turned out for the better.. sometimes the symptoms can mislead us all :) sometimes all they need is tender loving care to pull them thru

as for hobbling.. as I stated in another post.. my grandmother used it with great success when other methods failed.. she just used a tiny piece of yarn tied between legs.. but anything that keeps the legs from splaying and allows movent will do

I know, I'm so happy it turned out for the better too! I was getting nervous.

I took the vet tape off this morning and he is walking around like normal with the other ones!
I still put this rubber liner down in the corners and by the heat lamp to make sure he has better stability since he was sliding more on the paper towels earlier on.
But I think he is fine without it.

When does everyone switch to hay/shavings ?

:)
