Help! Band on the leg got too tight!!!

I didn't realize the band was getting too tight and then we went on vacation! It looks really bad. I cut the band but it has grown into the leg and really started bleeding when I pulled. The leg is super swollen and chicken can't hardly walk. What can I do?

Wait and see if it turns black. Treat the wound with a spray like bluekote or vetericyn. Watch for flies. Hopefully it heals up.

If the leg turns black it means circulation was cut off enough to kill all tissues and the bird would lose the leg more than likely, so hopefully you caught it in time.

Drench the wound with Hydrogen Peroxide. Now buy some purpose made wing bands for your flock.

Some people on BYC swear that leg bands never never never tighten up on a chickens feet. What kind of leg band was it?

Lesson learned - it wasn't regular poultry bands. It was a loom band. I should have removed it but my black copper maran has feathered feet and I couldn't see it anymore so I forgot about it.
