Good morning,

I have a 17 week old Rhode Island Red who has been recovering separately from the rest of the flock from a case of wry neck which happened at the end of May (what was supposed to be a pullet turned out to be a rooster and beat her up..she has since fully recovered from the wry neck). About 2 weeks ago she had a bloody stool. I checked other threads for what was considered normal. It appeared that she was shedding her intestinal lining. Last week Thursday she had another bloody stool. However this one was somewhat different. Her first morning stool was normal (firm). The second and third were a little watery (she does not like to expel in her nighttime coop and tends to hold it in). There was a second bloody stool in a clear liquid shortly thereafter with a significant amount of blood, followed by a 3rd with less bright red blood. I immediately started her on Corrid at a dose of 1tsp per gallon of water last Thursday the 17th. During that time her stools have been normal. This morning, it occurred again. Normal stools followed by a small bloody one (which appeared to be an intestinal lining shedding) followed by 2 more large bloody ones in clear fluid. After the bloody stools her next 2 stools were back to normal again. She has the entire time exhibited a healthy appetite, drinking plenty of water and is by no means lethargic. She is actually quite lively and being a trouble maker. The questions are: is this Cocci? is it normal to continue bleeding? If so, what amount of additional time will she keep bleeding? or is there a possible underlying other illness? Thanks for your help!

Give her some vitamins and probiotics after the Corid to help get the gut bacteria back to normal, as well as replace vitamins. Vitamin K is low after cocci which could affect bleeding. Capillary worms can also cause blood in stools, so you could get her stool tested by a vet or go ahead and treat for it. SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer in a higher dose than usual, 1 ml given for 5 straight days orally, is the treatment for capillary worms.

Thank you for getting back to me. Can I treat her with the Goat wormer the same time I am treating her with the Corid? The bloody stool seems to be on a 5 or 6 day interval and then all is normal. Can you confirm that the Corid dosage is correct for the treatment? Thanks again!

The Corid dose for a severe outbreak is no less than 1.5 teaspoons per gallon.

The preventative dose (.006%) for Corid Powder is 1/3 teaspoon.
The preventative dose (.006%) for Corid liquid is 1/2 teaspoon.

The moderate outbreak dose (.012%) for Corid Powder is 3/4 teaspoon.
The moderate outbreak dose (.012%) for Corid liquid is 1 teaspoon.

The severe outbreak dose (.024%) for Corid Powder is 1.5 teaspoons.
The severe outbreak dose (.024%) for Corid liquid is 2 teaspoon.

FDA recommendations:
http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/animaldrugsatfda/details.cfm?dn=013-149
"Chickens
Indications: For the treatment of coccidiosis.
Amount: Administer at the 0.012 percent level in drinking water as soon as coccidiosis is diagnosed and continue for 3 to 5 days (in severe outbreaks, give amprolium at the 0.024 percent level);
continue with 0.006 percent amprolium-medicated water for an additional 1 to 2 weeks."

And this link has these instructions:
http://www.drugs.com/vet/amprol-9-6-solution-can.html
"Poultry - as Soon As Caecal Coccidiosis Is Diagnosed, Give 0.024% Amprolium In The Drinking Water For 5 To 7 Days. Continue The Treatment With 0.006% Amprolium Medicated Water For An Additional One To Two Weeks. No Other Source Of Drinking Water Should Be Available To The Birds During This Time."

I have used Corid and Safeguard together and seen no side effects and I have not seen any published info that says they can't be used together.

Thanks Kathy for responding. Your information was extremely helpful! I started her out on 1 tsp per gallon of water on the 17th. I will conclude this dosage tomorrow and reduce it according to your post. Do you know how long the bleeding will continue for Cocci? She passed bloody stools again early this morning and the bloody stools appear to be on a 5 -6 day interval (even though I started her on the Corid Powder on the 17th). Other than the bloody stools you would not know that she was ill. She is being a trouble maker today! She loves her greens. Thanks again! :)
