HELP! Broken egg inside hen?

I've had this go both ways - one died within 3 days and the other two survived though weren't laying anymore. I'd get a glove and gently feel around inside- if you have some kind of lubricant, your hen will appreciate it. At the very least if you can get the rest of shell/sac out of her, she shouldn't be trying to push on it anymore. But, the egg material when it's in there can cause a terrible infection.

Okay, thank you! I'll be giving her a bath today and I'll try and find any leftover egg shells.

UPDATE: She has currently been in the nesting box for a little over an hour now... should I keep her there and wait or give her a bath and examine her immediately?

You could also just bath her in some warm soapy water and rinse the soap afterwards. Laying a shell-less egg can be common, although not normal. It happens more common in a brand new layer before things get worked out, but can be common if their has been a virus (infectious bronchitis) in the flock, or if there has been an injury. About all you can do is to make sure she is getting enough calcium and vitamin D in her diet.

My best daily layer got attacked and injured by a neighbor’s dog, and stopped laying for 5 months. When she resumed laying, she laid a rubbery or very thin-shelled egg daily for a year or more. Then she later died of probable internal laying.

Here is a good article that shows the many different abnormal eggs, and #10 explains about shell-less eggs.

Thank you! Although I can't see the link...

I'll hopefully have time to do the epsom bath soon. Also, yes I believe part of the sac came out but no shell.
There may have not been a hard shell to begin with.
It could just have been a soft shelled (shell less egg) rubbery type egg.
