HELP! Bumblefoot Epidemic???

Why does it need to be colorless? I have regular betadine I think.

I actually scheduled for the girl with the swollen toe to have surgery on Monday. I soaked her foot last night and when I palpated it the toe would not bend at all, and her foot won't lay flat. There is nowhere for the infection to go because it's deep and the tissue is mostly healed. There's no scab of infection anymore. So hopefully the vet can clean it all out and that she'll recover ok
I hope so too hokankai, from what was explained it has something to do with what is mixed with the iodine which is Ammonium. All I know is it worked on both of my hens.

I am not too familiar with the iodine, however I researched a little and found this website which explains the different types of iodine.

They stated that the colorless is an alcohol base. Hope you find this helpful.

You should see if you can watch the vet do the surgery and you could learn what to do.

Best wishes.

That's what I read too, and alcohol stings. I think betadine is the kind that doesn't sting when it's on skin.

I was able to move the surgery up to tomorrow! Unfortunately it's while I'm at work, so I won't be able to watch.

I took in Anna, the one with the swollen toe, for surgery on Monday. The vet said it went well but there was a lot of dead tissue she had to dig out. No wonder! The others are doing well and I'm checking their feet often for signs of it worsening.

How is she doing? I hope they all clear up. It can be a challenge at times.

How did this all turn out for you, Hokankai? I hope you will share an update.

Having the same troubles with my ducks. I really believe it's the ground that causes it in cases like ours. Right now, my duck yard is compacted dirt (almost like concrete, but not quite as hard). The surface is abrasive, and just rubs and scrapes the feet as they walk (like a fingernail file/emory board). I imagine that your rough gravel would have the same effect.

Stinks about the gravel, I bought some "pea" gravel that turned out to be regular gravel that was sharp rather than smooth.
