I have a barely one day old that I hatched here. It was from an egg that a hen was setting on. We were unsure how long she had been brooding. I candled the eggs (15 in all) and found that only 3 were developing. The other 12 were cold, and she had just gotten off the nest. The eggs I took had unusually large air sacs, took up almost half the shell.

We had only noticed the hen 'missing' for about a week. That was about a week ago. The chicks (2) hatched yesterday. One had no problems, except some curling in the toes that has since straightened out.

The other one is the one that is having problems. When it hatched, it still had a bit of the yolk sac attached to its belly. One of its feet is crooked toe, I guess, but its whole foot is curled, so bad it can hardly walk. We tried putting a 'boot' on it today, which is staying, but doesn't seem to be helping. Every time we pick the little thing up, it cries. It also makes like a clicking noise when it is not crying. I gave it a drink of water, by dipping its beak. It acted like it was choking on it, and i know I didn't stick it's whole beak in the water. Now it is laying on it's belly on the floor of the brooder, has it's eyes closed, and doesn't even try to move if the other chicks step on it.

What can I do for this little chick? I don't have any poly-vi-sol drops, but I do have a vitamin/electrolyte solution to mix in the water. Should I give it this?

Please help!!

Oh my! I am so sorry that you have not gotten any answers. I am still sort of a newbie but I did have that happen on a hatchery chick after 2 days. She did pass away and I tried every hing I knew how. Seperate, keep warm, try to keep her hydrtaed. I was told that sometimes there is internal things wrong that we don't know of and can't help. You are doing the best you can. Hang in there and let me know how it goes. I will be thinking of you. I have a tiny little kitten in my bathtub right now, and I am pretty positive the poor little thing is on his way out.
