I have an egg in the incubator that I got from my mom, well after a week ( yesterday ) there was a pip and chirping.

This morning no change, but I peeled back the edge of the shell that was started and am concerned because it appears that the chick is surrounded by dried up membrane. The chick is in the same position it was in yesterday as well.

Am I over concerned? Should I do anything?

Ok this is what if the membrane is dry get some tweezers and start to take the shell off make sure the membrane is dry ...If is stuck on the chick a little water to soften it..The chick will dye if you dont help it out..

I've been helping, picking back shell until I hit soft membrane, that is light pink and you can see the blood in. Chick is doing good and very vocal. Just taking it slow and easy right now!

How long since the pip? I have seen an egg wait almost 24 hours after the pip to finaly come out on it's own. so if it less than that do not panick yet. if the humidity in the bator is low and the membrane is dried out use a q-tip with WARM water to lightly moisten the membrane. remember there is a thin membrane under the shell and another thin "sack" around the fetus. even if the membrane under the shell is dry thats ok the one around the fetus is what u r concerned about because this may stick to the baby trapping it in the shell. If after 22-24 hours the fetus is not showing signs of coming out I would assist by breaking off the shell gently from the end the baby has pipped, gently moisten and peel back the film under the shell, and with the damp q-tip gently push the sack over the baby trying not to tear it because it has blood vessels that are still attatched through the cord. key word is gentle!!!

once the baby is out it should start tomove around and the cord will detatch itself.
good luck and keep us posted.

Yup, it's the inner membrane that was dried out! It's been a little over 24 hrs. I'm trying to be patient! I'm not going into the "soft tissue" at all despite my horrible desire to just get him outta there!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

He is outta there! So far so good! I put him back in the brooder tray to dry off, he's going to be a lonely guy in the tub by himself! I wasn't expecting him to hatch, hopefully we'll get some more going soon!

. if the first little guy wants some company, we use a small (about 2-3") stuffed animal for it too cuddle while it waits for friends.
