Thanks Peeps! I'm REALLY worried, now! When I took the pic a couple hours ago, The chick was still moving in the egg. It has NOT moved now for over an hour. Anything I shoud do? It looks REALLY dry, and I'm afraid the heat lamp is too hot! Also, no more appearances from the one who pipped this morning! The heat lamp is hot, but I don't think it reaches 100 degrees. Plus, it is in an open box, so the heat can escape. I'm afraid i'm cooking these guys! HELP! @Pyxis , you are the expert here in hatching, :bow what do you think about the heat? :barnie

ok folks, so I had to run into town to pick up kids from school. My oldest son stayed home, and kept an eye on the eggs. We have sports practice today, so I won't be home until about 830 tonight. He said that he thinks I'm cooking them! (he's 18). It's really hot under the lamp, and we were at 81 degrees this afternoon, so I turned the heating pad off. They are still in the open box with the heat lamp on them. I'm ordering a freakin incubator, even if I don't need one, just in case this happens again! Any advice on a good incubator? I've never owned one. I'm also pretty handy, so homemade ideas and advice are welcomed, too!

Do you have any kind of thermometer in there? If not I'd add one and see what it says.

I'd also try to oil the membrane - do you have coconut oil on hand to use? If not, perhaps bacitracin or neosporin?

I absolutely love and recommend the Harris Farms Nurture Right 360 for a small tabletop incubator. Never had any issues with mine, it's all digital, has a built in autoturner, and is all around really nice.

Thank you so much! I DON'T have a thermometer! All the digital ones I have at home, won't read without being in the mouth or ear, and I tried a strip on (the kind that goes on the forehead), and an old fashion mercury one, to no avail. I do have coconut oil!! I use it for almost everything! I should have thought about it sooner! I'm not at home yet, it's 7pm here in Hawaii, and I'm afraid that I've been gone too long. :(

Thank you for the incubator recommendation! I think from now on, i'd like to have one on hand, Just in case!

@Pyxis Oh no! I just read your article, Assisted Hatching Guide for All Poultry!! It was wonderful! Informative, insightful, and well written (I was an English Major in college, shhhh! don't tell anybody! lol), But now I'm in a panic! I will still be in town for another hour, half hour drive home, and I think the chick may have been shrinkwrapped! :barnie

I am sorry to report that the half opened/hatched chick, I believe was shrink wrapped, and did not make the hatch. I'm so sad! :( On another note, egg 2, that pipped at about 7 am this morning, made the hole a little bit bigger while I was gone. I've included a picture here. Still, I'm afraid that the temperature is not right, and I'm going to roast them alive, or freeze them to death! Does anybody out there know if a heat lamp is hot enough or too hot? And should I still be using the heating pad underneath the eggs? I turned it off today, because it was pretty hot. And I still cannot get an accurate temperature! :barnie

Good evening, Peeps, It is 8pm, Hawaii time. I just got home. The eggs are still under the heat lamp, but the one that at 7 am yesterday morning, and made the hole a little bit bigger lastnight, has not progress since. AT ALL. Am I cooking these poor things? Are they freezing to death? Should I try to assist? Please help! I've been watching videos and reading articles, but there is so many different theories out there! :th
