help chick out of shell? WITH PIC

I wish you luck. You see so many of these kinds of posts on here and they are all so sad. Please update us how she is doing.

yes BYCer's are all so helpful. Mine are on there 11th day so when it is there time to hatch and any of these problems develop i will also know what to do.

Sorry for your heartache but thank you for sharing so everyone else can learn and be prepared.

I had six that hadn't hatched, zipped, pipped nothing by day 25. I was opening them up from the top to see what was going on. All were dead except one. I poked a small hole in the membrane working from the air sac down. I got it most of the way hatched and saw that the umbilical cord was still attached but no yolk. So, I wrapped it in a warm wet rag and put it back in the bator. He/she was so weak I thought for sure I had killed it. But it is now 9 days old and doing fine just a bit smaller than everyone else.

I hope your chick(s) are OK this morning. As I said last night, we were really worried about 5 of ours because they were really bad shrink wrapped. We helped them all we could last night so we said a prayer and went to bed. They woke me up at 5 this morning chirping away. 2 were up walking with shells attached to their booties, 2 were still in their membranes (and partial shells) and the 5th was completely dry and walking around!!! So I remembered what I had read from another BYC member and I ran warm water over their booties and removed the shell. The 3rd that was in the membrane couldn't move because the membrane was so tight. I kept it damp while I slowly removed the membrane and stuck them all back in the bator. The last one was dead but you have no idea how shocked I was that the others made it. They looked deathly when we went to bed.

And when I was putting the last one back in the bator, one of the newest chicks jumped out and landed on the floor. I was in tears thinking I had killed it but it hopped back in the bator and is still running around. We're calling them our miracles chicks. I've never seen so much will to live. We're still waiting to see what happens with our 5th one. Hopefully he'll make it.

I can't thank you all enough for your support. This is our first time and we've made so many mistakes but we've spent so much time reading the forum and it's made a huge difference. I hope I can help someone so I can pay it forward!

Best of luck to all of you!!

morning report. she still has not moved. her top half is out, looks normal. I still cant see if her sac is attached. Not much chirping, she flaps her wing on occacion, is breathing heavy, and eyes on open breifly. Id say its iffy. she is so weak, but moving more than she was. I just wonder how long she will lay there.

I agree. I'd try to remove the membrane. I took mine to the bathroom with a heater blowing toward it and kept warm water running so I could keep the membrane wet. One it was damp, it came off easily. Mine still had the cord attached so I left it on and put it back in the incubator. Good luck.

If you do it (I do it all the time) dont take the bottom part of the shell off of her. Let it stay attached and lay her down and eventually she will shed it on her own. If the membrane starts bleeding (more then a drop) put her back in the incubator and give it two hours before going back to work. It sounds like the blood is out of the membrane anyways by now. DONT take the bottom of her shell or membrane off.

I agree about not taking the bottom shell off the chick. We did this last night with two of ours and they were up running around with the shell still attached to their booty this morning. I took them to the bathroom with a heater and ran warm water over them because the membrane was dry and nothing was attached. They are alive and well now. The last one I removed everything and the cord was still attached so I don't know if he'll make it or not.

All of you members are awesome. We couldn't have helped our last 5 chicks if it weren't for you guys!!!

just got back to check on her. she was stuck to the lower half of the shell. I worked it off with a wet papertowel. I am so happy. she has absorbed all the yolk and is on her feet. the sac has fallen off, but she still has a very sensitive cord hanging from her belly. it is sticking out, short, but looks to have blood in it, or red. I hope it heals up.
