We just hatched 3 Speckled Sussex chicks yesterday, and apparently one of them has a bad sore on the joint where the leg bends. Just noticed today the chick is having trouble putting weight on that leg, and it looks pretty infected. Been treating the leg with peroxide and neosporin, and have it seperated from the rest of the chicks. We've been feeding it tiny bits of garlic, dunno if that's going to help it survive or not. It seems lethargic, so I'm afraid the infection may have spread too far already...any suggestions? Are there any antibiotices that are safe for chicks this age?

Thanks ahead of time.

I would discontinue the garlic. Too strong for a 3 day olds system. You can continue to do your best with neosporin etc but she probably will not make it. She most likely has a systemic infection.

You should not use antibiotics unless you know what kind of infection you are dealing with and what is the correct antibiotic to give. Only a vet can tell you what is growing. The test is a culture and sensitivity. Even if the chick beats the infection she just won't grow and develop like the others.

Did you try cleaning that sore with iodine mixed with water into a tea solution?

You can also mix a drop of iodine in the neosporin - use that to dress the sore.

Just keep treating the sore - as Purple said, cut the garlic. make sure she eating well and put her with one buddy from the other batch of chicks if he won't peck the leg more. That will encourage him to eat. They're flock creatures. Also boost his nutrition for healing by giving him a tiny bit of boiled egg yolk as a treat. Also a dab of plain yogurt wouldn't hurt.
