HELP!!!!! chick with leg open*I DID IT* another update* bad news :(

Good job! I would keep the stump covered with neosporin, If it has a painkiller make sure it doesn't have a -caine medication in it (such as lidocaine). -Caine's are toxic to chickens. Neosporin usually doesn't use -caine's, but several other triple antibiotic ointments/creams do, so just check the label. If you keep it covered with neosporin and wrapped to protect it from bacteria, etc., then it should heal fine.

right now she has just finished pigging out on chick starter and is flat out under the lamp,
it looks like she has brown/red wing pin feathers, any idea on the colour she might be?
(she's a silke)
luke.

Wow Luke! Very brave. As an ex-vet tech, I'm not sure I would have been able to do that but on the other hand, until put in that situation, I guess I honestly can't say. Good for you for wanting to do everything to save the baby.
As long as infection doesn't happen, I think the baby will do fine. Keep it as clean as you can. Watch very closely for infection, lethargy, etc. One legged chickens are out there so best of luck with this one.
Keep us posted on her recovery!!!!

Oh and as soon as you can.....more pics!

Hi Luke-
Very impressed with your story... just wanting to know, though- How did you get her to stay still during the amputation? Surely she was too little for anestesia- but what do I know.
