Help, chicken attacked by dog.

So i put her out in her separated coop. She is doing fine but i think something is going on with her crop. I checked on her and she has saliva coming out of her mouth. She acts like she is trying to swallow but i don’t see anything.

Is the crop full, squishy, hard?
Have you noticed any sour smell to her breath while you had her inside?

Check her crop first thing in the morning before she eats/drinks and let us know if it's empty or flat.

At first i thought it was her crop but it emptied just fine. Tonight, i noticed she would make some gurgling noises when she would open her mouth. Then she would sneeze or shake her head and all of the saliva/mucus would go flying all over. She is still eating and drinking. I thought about the moldy box and thought respiratory illness. I bought some Tylan 50 and gave her some before bed. She was also outside today and it was cold. So i don’t know if it was the exposure to the moldy box and then going outside. I decided to replace the box with another one and try to prevent more water spills.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear this.
The moldy box did cross my mind, but I was hoping that it was possibly a crop issue.

How cold is it where you are? It's hard to know, but it may be better to leave her outside where she has more fresh air, but if the mold is the cause of the sneeze and mucous, she will need to be kept slightly warm.

You can try the Tylan50 to see if that makes a difference. Weigh her so you give her the proper dosage. Tylan has a wide range dosage (10-40mg/kg), usually I would start with the mid-dosage of 20mg/kg which equals out to .10ml or cc per 1pound of weight, give it 2-3times per day for 5days in a row. I would also give the Tylan50 orally so you avoid injection site necrosis.

You mention you are replacing the box? So are you bringing her back inside?
What type of water container are you using for her? What I saw someone doing and thought a neat idea was to put the water container inside a small shallow dish (like a baking sheet) Anything to help catch spills. You could also try putting a puppy pad under the water container, but you will still want to clean it up very regularly to help prevent the mold.

Just a thought here - I use a wire dog kennel for separation and also have a small hospital/brooder/grow out area outside, so I just use something like kennel cups or "coop cups" that hang on the wire for water/food. Kennels can be pricey and a box does work - but you may want to keep an eye on craigslist or local ads- sometimes you may be able to pick up a kennel for just a few bucks, people move and don't want to transport all their stuff.

Keep us posted.

I too use a good sized wire dog crate as my hospital. They fold up, so they're easy to store when not in use. I have several of the smaller "Little Giant" quart sized waterers, so spilling is not too bad. I put hay on one end. Another thing I use is the Rubbermaid shelf liner. The stuff with the little holes in it. I put a piece of it under the water, and food. It can be changed several times a day if needed. It washes in the washing machine too.

We've just had a cold snap. So its in the 30's during the day and lower at night. That's why I decided to bring her back in. Her head is still exposed and I think she has gotten used to the inside temperature. I'm thinking of running the fan in the bathroom as well. She was only outside for about 30 minutes when I noticed the gasping/swallowing that she was doing.

Yes, she may have to acclimate some, before she can stay outside. Small changes at a time. I know you're anxious to get her out, and she's anxious to be out, but small changes at a time, until she's ready.

I think she’s improving. I don’t know if it’s the tylan or not. The gurgling sound is gone but she sounds kind of stuffy when she breathes. She’s eating more. I think I’m going to give her the tylan for four days and then see how she does. It will warm up to 40 next weekend. Do you think a couple of hours outside during the day each day can help her acclimate and then slowly increase the time. I’ve left the heat lamp out in her area overnight to check and it kept the water from freezing. I’m guessing the temp inside the coop didn’t drop below 30.

I'm glad to hear that she is getting better, I would give her the full 5days of Tylan50.

I would wait until she is completely well before introducing her to the outside temps, but your plan of a few hours a day-slowly increasing the time outdoors sounds like a good one. It will be hard on her to go from house temps to 30F at night suddenly.

I understand you both want her out, but you are doing good, hang in there :hugs

I thought she was getting better but now I'm thinking its sour crop instead. She still gurgles but not as bad as before. I was thinking of trying some fennel tea or do you think I should try some monistat instead. I really don't want to lose this one.
