Help, chicken attacked by dog.

I used blu kote at the beginning. I think the pecking has more to do with her being the lowest in the pecking order. I don’t think it’s because of her skin. When they peck her it’s never broken the skin.

Hi my chicken had a similar experience today. It's so traumatic. Her injuries are bad but she is able to stand up and drink water and had some blueberries. I don't know if she's going to survive the night. Did yours and how did you punish the dog?

This is a very old thread. It would be best to start a new thread of your own to get help. If you can post some pictures of the wounds, you can get some advice.
As for the dog, there are a lot a variables that we don't know. Was it your dog, or someone elses? How old, what kind of training, etc. For most dogs, going after a chicken is just 'normal' behavior, they are predators by genetics, and even just 'playing' can cause serious injury or death. Some dogs have very strong prey drive, so anything that runs, squawks, flaps, etc. is going to attract attention and be exciting to them. So training, rather than punishment, is the best way to prevent things like this. For some dogs, even with training, they may never be 100% trustworthy without supervision around small animals. It just depends on the dog, and the training. Or just keep the birds secured where they can't be gotten to.
