Help, chicken attacked by dog.

Secure the dog OR the chickens OR both. A good run for the dog when it's outside, or a dog proof coop, and run for the chickens, or both. Now you know what to do about it.

I checked tonight and it wasn’t huge. She is still pooping but it’s not moist. She is drinking. So i don’t know if she is eating smaller portions more often or not. She seems to have an easier time with scratch versus the feed so i don’t know if i switched to crumble if it would be better for her.

You can certainly try crumbles, it may be easier for her.

Thanks. I went ahead and made an appt with the vet. But they aren't in until friday. I'm going to try the crumbles for now and see how she does this week. I gave her some wet feed this morning and she was super hungry. She seemed to have a lot easier time with it.

I checked her this afternoon. She does much better with the wet feed and crumbles. But she seems to only eat when i offer it to her. She could be eating when I’m not there but not a lot. No more saliva, so I’m thinking it’s definitely her esophagus. How much feed does a chicken eat each day? I think she had about a 1/2 cup wet. I’m hoping i can get her to eat more or offer some tuna and egg too. But small pieces.

Sorry this happened to ya. I thought I'd made it clear to my dog to protect those chickens. I guess dogs jes love there chicken too much. I cant put my dog up because I have a crazy neighbor that does all sorts of things to us and I feel thraetened.

I'm glad that she is eating better. 1/2cup wet may be about the right amount - I have never really measured what they eat. Does her crop seem to fill up?

I didn't have time to check. But when I checked on her at 6:30 a.m. She was already up and eating the crumbles. I gave her some more wet feed and she was going crazy. So i don't know if her appetite is better or that she just hasn't had the right food for so long.

This sounds promising!:)

Quick update. She is eating a lot more now. Ever since I started wetting the food her appetite has increased. I also have left the food out in the run area. She tends to eat better when the other chickens are around. Yesterday, she ate about 8 ounces of food. So I put out more today. I'm hoping she'll eat about 12 ounces. I think a chicken is supposed to eat up to a pound of food a day. Crossing my fingers.

I'm glad to hear that she is eating better!

I had to do some googling:D Looks like the "best estimates" of how much a hen eats a day is 1/4 to 1/3 pound of food a day. Sounds like you are on track - wet feed will weigh more. I would continue to put out what you think she will eat, if she eats it all, then offer extra - usually a hen will not overeat - she may be catching up from being down and out too.

I agree with you - they do much better when other chickens are around.
