Help! Chicken got stuck in a tree by her wing!

You know, it may just be terribly sprained and or the muscles are sore. You may need to just make some sort of sling for awhile. I think if I was hanging by my arm all day, my arm might be totally useless for several days.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I wrapped the wing, and then I left her in a small pen outside today. Now I am SO angry at myself. Somehow she escaped over a 2 foot chicken wire fence to be with her friends in the main yard. I think that she and her other barred rock friend removed the bandage, and now I am really worried. Now there is an abscess looking bump mid-wing, and it looks like she has pecked a bloody hole into her limp wing. She is the only chicken with blood on her head, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't her friends. I am also worried that she was stepping on it all day. It has definitely gotten worse. I used hydrogen peroxide to clean her whole wing, and then re-wrapped it more securely to her body. I padded a dog crate with straw, and she is locked inside of it, in the house. This sucks. I thought that free ranging was supposed to be humane for chickens- but it seems there is a dangerous side too. A friend who works with an animal rescue group and also for an agriculture board has offered to take a look tomorrow... but I am thinking now that she will be a lop-sided chicken at best. I can't imagine a wing healing after it has been dislocated, couldn't be popped back, and then was dragged around and pecked at. I am incredibly sad and worried.

Not your fault. You are doing the best you can. Keep her confined and wrapped. I'd check the open wound on a regular basis (maybe a couple of times a day), and be sure she has food and water. I'd use some neosporin or antibiotic cream on it. Maybe not use Hydrodgen Peroxide again now that the wound is clean, some people think it will damage otherwise healthy tissue. Hang in there and quit beating yourself up. You were doing what most of us would have done in that situation.

Keep us posted.

Can you borrow a dog crate from someone? We have a couple of large (lab or gs sized) dog crates that we use for iso when the need arises. It'll keep her world small and quiet, and she wont be able to open the door.
