HELP! Chicken in trouble - drooling, lethargic

Thank you for your kind words. I'd like to know if Tleventer ever found out what had been wrong and if there was any other illness with the other birds. I plan to dust with DE today.

I am so sorry for both of you that lost your hens before a solution could be found. I have no idea, but drooling chickens does not sound like egg bound hens. Our hens will pucker their butts whenever I pick them up. Maybe sour crop? Any bad smells?

I am also sorry that you didn't get immediate help on the board. You might try pm'ing the experts on the board in a real emergency. I can't imagine anyone that wouldn't want to help.

When she was laying on the bathroom floor after her bath my husband said her crop was full of air and he squeezed it to deflate it. She was not eating or drinking and gasping for air. I don't think I would have been able to save her even if I knew what was wrong. The remaining 8 birds are fine. Maybe this can be an excuse to get a few more this spring

I don't care what anyone says, I will never dust with DE. I use DE as a cleanse for myself and know that until it is well mixed into my water, hold your breath! DE is actually microscopic, sharp fossils and if you breathe in so much as a tiny amount, you will have an irritated, dry cough. Very uncomfortable. I even use it in my plants to easily kill ant infestations. I can't imagine dusting a chicken's environment with this.. beaks only a foot away from the ground, bathing in it, stirring it up and breathing it in..no way! Maybe that is where some respiratory illnesses are coming from?

I realize I'm dredging up an old topic, but my Ameraucana hen that is about 1 year old I found this morning drooling,lethargic and barely able to keep her eyes open. No visible wounds, cannot feel an impacted crop (I lost another to that about 8 months ago). The only time I could see her moving around was to get away from me when I tried to catch her to put her in a warm dog crate for safety. Barely ate a little bit of yogurt, not drinking water, and she's been under my wood enclosed deck all day... so far under that I cannot get her out. When I go to check on her, she is standing but that could be because of the flashlight alerting her (?). Fortunately, I don't have a lot of predators in my area (Tampa, FL), but I am literally worried sick about her.

Any thoughts/input would be greatly appreciated. I haven't been able to sleep for 2 weeks because of other issues, and this is just another one that is really causing me a lack of sleep, and serious concern and worry.

Louise died early this morning under my deck.

My concern now is if she could have been contagious.
