Good Afternoon, I have a 2 year old Rhodes island red, who recently on Tuesday I saw was laying down and making a gurgling noise. I quickly separated her from the flock. I got online and started doing research. I purchased vetrx and applied 5 drops down her moth and 2 drops in each nostril. She has now stopped gurgling but I did notice she shakes her head and is still a little bit out of it. She’s laying down all the time. I’m not sure what to treat her for or if I should just keep using vetrx. Her crop didn’t have food in it on Tuesday but now she has been eating. Any recommendations on medication and or where to purchase the medication would help me greatly. I am new to chicken owing had them now for about a year. Thanks

So sorry your hen is sick! I would have thought impacted crop but you say it is empty so I am not sure what to think, either! You can read lots of articles on here and might find one that fits her symptoms. You can also Google the symptoms and often it will lead to something from this site that is helpful. I hope she is better soon!

Have you added any new birds to your flock lately? I would try to figure out if her crop is full of liquid and not emptying, or if she has a respiratory disease. Does she have any bubbles or foam in either eye, swelling of an eyelid or her face, secretions in her nostrils or throat, head shaking to get rid of those, gasping for air, or rattly breathing? If she has any of those, I would get some Tylosin antibiotic, and add 1 tsp per gallon of water for 5 days. Tiagard or Denagard may also be used. Here is a place to buy Tylosin:

That’s the thing, no new birds they all have been together for about 1 year now all happy, she has no swelling, no foam out of eyes or nose, as of now she’s not gurgling or making that open mouth movement. I’ve tried reading articles and I believe it’s a respiratory issue, but she has imorives with the Vetrx, it’s just now she’s just kind of laying down and not really her usual self. She still eats and drinks fine. I live in Washington state so il not sure if I can purchase tylan or tylosin powder in my local feed. But if not I’ll order the powder online via you’re link! Thanks for the tip I really do appreciate it

Yes I was trying to google all day trying to figure out, I’ve come to realize it maybe one of 2 things, by the research either a respiratory infection or gapeworm seems to be a second option. The thing is with the VetRX she’s stopped the noise and the mouth opening but still is under the weather. I talked to a local guy from the feed store he said he thinks it’s cause maybe she ate something and that chives with Apple would clear her up. I have yet to try this, but also am going to get medicine for respiratory infections and possibly gapeworm meds

Hi, I'm wondering how your chicken is doing today? I have an Isa Brown who started making gurgling noises yesterday. I must have found the same sites you did from Google, and I ran out for some VetRx, which seemed to help. This morning, she was fine but this afternoon she's gurgling again and stretching her neck up to breathe. I used more VetRx, and she's hiding under the coop but the gurgling has stopped.

Did you ever find out if your chicken had a respiratory illness, or gapeworm? I'm not sure how to treat this.

Thank you so much.

So I used the Vet Rx for about 5 days, and I saw improvement rapidly. She was not gurgling and back to her normal self. I’m not sure what she had. But as of today I heard her gurgling again and opening her mouth once again. Almost like she’s gasping for air. She’s still eating and drinking normal. I used 5 drops down her mouth and one in each nostril as someone recommended I did again today. I’ll see if she improves I’m most likely going to purchase tylan injection or powder, and see how that works.
