Help! Chicken is Molting in November

welcome-byc.gif
Glad you joined us!

It is pretty normal for chickens to molt at this time of year as the daylight hours shorten. Your hen should be fine as long as she doesn't get wet and stays out of the wind.

Good luck with her! And feel free to ask any other questions that you have. We're all here to help!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Yes, chickens can molt at the coldest times of the year. Some wait til the dead of winter to shed their feathers!! She will be fine. If she does happen to look a bit cold in the mornings, (feel her feet, if they are really cold, then she is no doubt cold too), you can turn a heat lamp on for her for an hour or so to get her going and hungry enough to eat.

Enjoy your bird and welcome to our flock!

Glad you joined us. Sounds like having a chicken(s) is your destiny. Did the doctors test you to see if you are allergic to the chicken feathers? Maybe they're wrong. But if they are right, make sure you wear a mask and love the new one.

We're glad to have you.

As long as she has a place to get out of the wind, she will likely be fine.

Good luck with her!

I have a small flock of 3 SL Wyandottes and one of them molted her head feathers last week (right before the Polar Vortex, thank you very much). She is now molting her neck and some side feathers. This is our first year together. So - it's normal to molt in November (maybe normal but not very smart in Colorado). How long does it last? How long does it take new feathers to grow? We're due for another snow storm in a few days.

Do the chickens act differently when they're molting? Gladys seems more nervous than normal and her comb and wattles have gone pinkish instead of the brighter red of the others (who are not molting - they lost a few tail feathers in the fall but that was it). Gladys is also not laying eggs now while the other two lay nearly every day.

They are very well fed and the two who are not molting look spectacular and have beautiful downy feathers.

Blooie, your weather is a lot like mine (only windier

). Do you find the molting chickens have a harder time staying warm? How long does the molting process last?
