Help! Chicken Killed In Run!!!!

The higher wire was maybe a bit over 2 feet off the ground. We've never seen a raccoon, though I do know there is a fox in the area. Best guess is that it climbed and reached through the wire.
Willing to shoot if I get the chance, but I don't know if I'll get the chance.
We were thinking of either hardware cloth to get rid of the large holes, or barbed wire so it couldn't get near. Which would be better?
Thank you all for you help.
Hardware cloth.

Wait for nightfall for the raccoon. It has gotten one chicken and will return looking for more. Blind it with a flashlight and shoot when it has froze. Husband and I picked off 5 out of a tree getting too familiar with our property.

A game camera will be helpful too. Raccoons come in family groups, while foxes may be more solitary. Upgrading your coop and run security is very important, and at least raccoons aren't too difficult to get in live traps. Sometimes you need a larger one for the really big older raccoons.
Better than staying up all night.
Mary
