Hi everyone,

I would appreciate any advice my mind is going crazy.

My hen just started laying this week she’s a bantum duccle, about 24 weeks old.

Just this morning I realised that she was making a gurgling/crackling sound. It sounds like when a human is hungry and your tummy rumbles. It’s not coming from her crop and her crop is normal as it’s early morning and it’s empty. It sounds like it’s coming from just before her vent. Around 3/4 down her wings.

She has been grooming all morning and doesn’t seem lethargic her poops look normal.

The noises just happen every so often and I used a stethoscope to listen to her lungs they seem the same as my rooster I’m not convinced it’s coming from her lungs as it doesn’t happen on every breath.

If anyone has experienced anything similar please anything would help

Can you post a video where we can hear these noises? Upload it to Vimeo or YouTube and then post the link to it here, if you can
Hi, every time I try to film it, it stops.... yesterday I didnt hear it but i heard it again this morning. its weird because I it almost travels through her body, i hear it more on her leg as if she was trying to pass gas... sometimes i hear it higher up but its always on the side. Its not coming from her crop or her lungs.

anything would help thanks

Hmm. I wonder if it's coming from one of her air sacs.

@aart, do we have any graphics showing where the sir sacs are located on a chicken's anatomy?
Hi, i had a look online and thats exactly where its coming from. Both the lower and the higher ones. It doesnt happen all the time mainly just in the mornings that I notice and she is acting completly normal.

She is eating and drinking, grooming, digging, having dirt baths and no other symptoms are present. She is also laying her eggs which are strong and healthy.

Any ideas what it could be? Or do I take her to the vet just incase?

Oh yay! I feel so smart now! :ya Lucky guess. Please let us know what you find out. Sounds like she has sprung a leak somehow. I really want to know what you find out and how this turns out.

It would be nice to hear a video of what you hear.

Not sure what you are hearing, perhaps the digestive system and gizzard?

No other symptoms - she's eating/drinking/active/pooping and laying eggs...I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Do make sure the coop has plenty of ventilation.

Air sacs and lung video below.
