((HELP!!! Chickens Have BUGS))

Thankyou very much. I am so sorry to you, erinaerina, It sounds like you have it worse than me-I couldn't stand the thought of Red Mites! (Thats what that sounds like.) I couldn't tell if what my chickens had were lice or mites, becaue I was told on here that mites were harder to rid of........ I won't let anone near my birds now. The kids i a babysitting are like, "Ooh, LETS ALL PLAY WITH THE CHICKENS! " And I was so Paranoid I started screaming, "No, the chickens are turning real mean, that one over there just bit my toe slam off yesterday! We had to go sew it back on!" And of course, them being kids, they believed me

But I am hoping this will wipe on over. I hope this never happens again.

We use DE as a preventative measure all the time. We simply add it to their bedding as well as their sand box. They dust themselves in the sand and shavings which also covers them in the DE. It kills any bugs it touches by dehydrating them. It is safe for your chickens as well as for you or any pets you may have around (dog, cat, ducks, etc.). You can find it at most all feed stores. People even use DE to kill fire ants and such and some people drink it for health reasons... its really great stuff. Good Luck!

check out this link for lots of info on DE and its many, many uses: http://wolfcreekranch1.tripod.com/defaq.html

What good timing! I just found lice on my girls, too.

Tried DE two days ago...no results yet so I am inclined to think it won't work.... Interesting to hear about the Frontline.... does it really work?? I have crap tons of it, plus it has a residual effect so it might be a good thing to prevent reinfestation!. i use it for my dog and my cats because I love them and take care of them. It is a super safe and effective product that has been around for years with such a low rate of reactions...plus, I have asthma so the less powders and dust I have to deal with, the better! Hmmm...

I just noticed my polish has lice. She is currently quarentined because of another problem I had in the coop. Someone(rooster I suspect) pecked her head clear and raw of feathers. Also pecked a hole in her neck. Both are healing. So, I have reading these postes and I just want to know what will be the best option for dealing with my chickens. Based on what I have read, I need to treat the coop. My coop is outside and I just have a dirt bottom floor. We eat the eggs from the coop so what is best to use there?

Can these lice be transfered to humans? I have children! UUUGGHHH!
