HELP - Chickens scattering feed out of hanging feeder

These are three years old and pretty much always in the play pen. Sometimes they will roll them so much they will be in a 1 foot hole, and once in a great while they will even bury them (I use the deep litter method in the pen, 2 feet of sawdust)

I think we started with 1/4" drill bit, put seeds in and shook to see if any came out. We may have ended up with 5/8" but I can't honestly say for sure.

These are sturdy G2 bottles, I'd never expect the new light water/pop bottle plastic to hold up at all.

My prototype was a plastic coffee can. Way too big for them to roll...

Take the corn out of the food hopper! :)

The wire is off an old reel of electric cattle fencing, its about the same gage as coat hangers. You can use any thing that doesn't allow them to stand in the feed. The ones in the chicken house I grew up with had a 1x1 across the top. I also cut the top edge of the trough at an angle so they would be uncomfortable standing on the edge.
