Hi BYC Members!
Firstly I'd like to thank you all for this AMAZING website. It is beyond informative and I'm so grateful to all you lovely people who share your knowledge and expertise! I usually lurk since 90+% of all problems have already been asked but now, google has failed me. I need help with a 5 day old chick's eye.

THE ISSUE;
I had 4 babies hatch out on the 13th of April; they are all doing fine except this one chick. His/her left eye is constantly watery and when I first looked closely at it (2-3 days ago), it had some down wedged into the corner of the eye. Long story short; down was removed from eye and clipped, antibacterial ointment (eye-safe!) was applied to her eye, but I've come to find that IT WON'T CLOSE.

(bad eye open)
Her lower eyelid is weirdly non-responsive; to 'blink', she mostly uses her 3rd eyelid instead of her lower lid. When she falls asleep, her eyelid SLOWLY closes around 2/3rds of the way, leaving a dark slit where her eyeball is visible. As you can see, her left eye is also very watery. I'm not sure if this is to compensate for her eye never closing correctly or if there is something quite wrong. She is also my only case of recurring pasty butt.

Her right eye is perfectly fine.

(good eye)
She eats well, sleeps well, drinks and plays. It's her eyeball that seems to bother her (she sometimes scratches it. When the down was stuck, she screamed when it was scratched. Now that it's removed, she doesn't yelp anymore). Is this going to affect her in the long run? Has anyone dealt with this before? I've tried to find other threads where this has happened but it's all threads where the eye won't open. HELP! (Apologies if this thread is in the wrong area!)

Eye staying...open? Now that's a strange one.

Is that down around her eyes dried like that? It could be some crusty stuff that's pinning her lids open. Try taking a warm wet q tip and gently cleaning around her lid...won't hurt.

What else won't hurt is keeping that eye lubricated in the meantime. I believe it is plain refresh (drops) and plain lubrifresh (ointment that kind of melts in the eye..you won't need much) that's used as a safe eye lubricant for birds (and other animals), but you must make sure they are the most bare-bones formulas on the shelf. Some added ingredients can hurt your birds. Of course, if you're feeling cautious or you can't find these, plain sterile saline for the eyes won't ever hurt your bird. It'll probably feel quite nice, just don't drown your bird with it

Hi everyone, thanks for all of your responses -very quick!! I used warm water + q tip and cleaned up a little around her eye; she seems to be able to close it much better, but still not all the way. Monitored her for a bit; the eyelid is more active now, so that's comforting! It's still a little slow to close; maybe time will help. I'll be bringing it up with the ER to see if any more info can be found, so Mods, please delete this thread if that's the rules. Lastly, THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!

Good news! Your thread is perfectly appropriate here. Our main role, in addition to welcoming you, is to point you in the right direction for the best advice (which also helps people begin to navigate the site).

Welcome!

I am pleased that your little one’s eye sounds like it is on the improve.

If you would like to and get a chance, please pop in to the Aussie Thread and say G’Day .. it is not the most bustling of BYC threads but you will be welcome.
