Hi everyone- just got my duckies - they have been doing wonderfully - been keeping the brooder anywhere from 95-90 , some times a bit lower if they look like they want cooler ..I walked away from my brooder for 15 minutes - temp was at 93.. I turned off my house air conditioner and I guess it caused the temperature to go way up-it was at 110!
But they were away from the heat - 2 by the food and two in the corner not right u Nader the light where the thermometer was ... I quickly ensured they were ok.. I gave them
Some sav- a- Duck electrolyte solution and they were eating and chirping ... but I’m afraid I hurt them in some way.. is here anything I need to worry about now? Or if hey are ok now they should be ok. I feel like I try so hard to make sure everything is good for them and then I did this.. ugh... so upset .. they seem ok now, eating and drinking
I am reading all kinds of information about the temperature for them!! What should I be aiming now for .. they are 5 days olds.. 95? 90? Or 85?
Thank you😞

If they are acting fine, they are ok, don’t worry. Let them tell you if they are hot or cold. Your brooder should be big enough that they have a warmer side and a cooler side. I also hang a feather duster in the hot side for shade and comfort. That way they choose the temperature they like. If they seem to always be on the cool side, they are hot. So, raise the heat lamp. If they are always huddled together under the heat lamp they are cold. So, lower the heat lamp. Takes all the guess work out it!

Hi, there. Welcome to BYC.

At five days old, try to keep the temp around 80/85, but leave space for them to get under the heat lamp, and move away as need be.
Oh wow 80-85!! I keep reading about 95 then drop 5 per week...but I always found them to Be most comfy at around 85-88, no wonder !! Ugh I’ve read sooo much and yet I still feel like I man messing up!
I still can’t understand how that went to 110, I am hoping it was the thermometer being literally right under the heart source and that’s they were not at that ..they just enjoyed another round off cold water and not food.. I even let them jump into the water bowl! Normally I use a waterer that is made so they can’t get inside it .. but I felt like hey deserved a nice cool refresher !( they loved it!)
Thank you both sooo much I keep having all kinds of thoughts that they are going to have some I’ll effect of this... ugh
I have four of them.. very sweet!

No worries, we all make mistakes. Are you sure you weren't reading the temperature requirements for chicks (?) because they do require slightly higher temps to be comfortable. Ducklings prefer it on the cooler side, especially Pekins, which is what you look to have. What kind of feed are you offering them? Mazuri?

Yes, Mazuri- they love it! I float it for them but also offer it in a bowl next to them- I make sure sometimes they just have the fresh water without any food in it- and i have been offering them the sav a chick two or three times a day during this first week.
I clean their brooder out three times a day - even though it has actually been very dry...also I have a play area that is a kiddie pool with nice soft towels and sheets and toys with a heat lamp you would use to heat an outdoor area in cooler weather - so that they can run a round a bit twice a day...
I think today I am going to a bigger brooder - I have a play pen I bought for them... it hasn’t nice high sides so so they can’t try to jump out... like they do in the kiddie pool, lol
Last night they slept with temperature at 81-83-on the cooler end and 90(on the warm end) ... they seem very happy.

No even last night i was reading about ducklings temperatures .. a lot of different things are found and I have “ the ultimate duck guide book” and she said 85-95...
anyway... thank you - they seem very happy.
I really was very upset with myself all night and really just could not believe how changing the temperature in my house Altered the brooder temperature... thank goodness I checked and that they were smart enough to go in areas that were away from the heat ...needless to say I sleep very close to them.. and was up checking on them all night ... yikes!!!
