Hello!
I'm almost positive that both of these are roos. These pics are at 9 weeks and 2 days. The all black one is an Ameraucana, and the other one is a Rhode Island Red.
The Ameraucana has almost what I would call a "second layer" or almost "mohawk" strip of feathers that starts about 2/3 the way down his back. I hope the picture shows it, but with black feathers, it was a challenge to get them to show in the photo.
The Rhode Island Red is in the center, standing next to one of his hatch mates (or from the same hatch day as he is), and while his comb is not huge, it is definitely bigger than the two other RIRs that I am just certain are girls. Also, about 2/3 the way down his back, it looks like he's getting a "bump" and it has a lighter color of feathers in that area. I'm suspecting that is the start of his saddle feathers?
This is my first group of chicks, so I just want to be sure, but I plan to list them them in the next few days so they can find a happy new home where they can do their roo duties.
