Beginning two weeks ago we started to notice that our little flock (6 golden comets) were starting to become quite loud,it sounded as if they were fighting or in a scuffle,we believed it to be an interruption in the pecking order, but it has continued, upon closer observation we noticed that most of the attention is being directed at one chicken in particular. We have observed her to make sure she isn't acting weak or sick, she seems in great health,no weight loss or egg laying problems,we are consistently getting 6 eggs a day and no abnormalities. We have observed a little more and noticed that she appears to favor a spot on top of the nesting box, running to the spot almost immediatly when any of the other chickens get close to the coop, like she is guarding it, the nesting box, which they all like to roost on top of, is near the front of the coop,in the darkest spot, but the area on top makes it easy to see out of the screening around the top of the coop,it is almost like she is afraid that another of the chickens is going to get this spot. She will dart out of the coop, run around spastically may drink a little and eat a little, cause a great racket then run right back into the coop after a few nips from the other girls and take that spot. Any ideas? They do have another roost and she is not the head hen. Any response is appreciated. Thank You in advance.

I have 56 hens, they all fight over the favorite 3 nest boxes ( even though there's 10 to choose from). Some of the boss hens will come in the coop and try to push out whoever's in the box at the time, and it can get quite noisy with the hens screaming back and forth at each other.

Its completely normal.

Thanks for that answer, my husband seems to think they are getting a little better. Not as loud this morning and seem to have calmed down some, but we will see what the day brings.
