My chick just hatched almost 24 hours ago and I tried to make it drink water, now it looks like it's choking! It keeps swallowing, head up, shaking the head violently. What do I do?! Please help!?

Make sure the nostrils are open. Hopefully it will cough up the water. Just don’t get it water anymore, but when trying to get one to drink, dip it’s beak into the water briefly. Some also will hold a spoonful of water near the side of the beak for it to sip. It is easy to choke them if you try to force water or food on them. I hope your chick gets better.

They seem open, I'm utterly confused about how to help it. It's all my fault, it hadn't drank even a drop since it hatched so I thought maybe just a bit and it backfired.
Is there anything else I can do? Because it isn't coughing up the water. The nostrils look clear but what if water went in? Is keeping the head up good for it? Because it's doing that a lot, neck stretched and moving backwards too, shaking its head. I only saw tiny droplets fall out of its mouth but it's still doing that and look like it's drinking water/swallowing on nothing.

Will it survive this?

Could the chick be having signs of wry neck? That is a neurological disorder that can cause the neck to be arched upward toward the sky, downward, or to the sky. They can walk backward or in circles. Chick vitamins can help, including vitamin E and thiamine. Or it could be gasping. I don’t know how you can help it after aspirating or choking on other than to just offer support.

Thanks for your advice, I ended up just trying to calm it down and gently rubbing it's neck downwards to help swallow anything that was stuck or soothe any pain or irritation. It eventually went to sleep, woke up doing the same thing on and off, monitored it all night, and today it's fine.

It was a reaction to drinking water, whatever it was, I knew it wasn't wry neck because I've had it happen to two of my late polish pullets.

I've left the chick to drink and feed itself learning from the rest, hopefully it stays fine. :)
