I recently have had an issue with finding very foul smelling eggs that are black goo on the inside. What could be causing this? I have six hens that are older and and four younger hens no laying yet an one rooster that I am looking for a home for him as I can not have roosters and he clearly was not a pullet. I need to find the cause of this problem ASAP as I am afraid to crack open any of my eggs and I certainly do not want to give anyone eggs as they will be put off from free range eggs.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Where are they laying?
You say 'free range' ....so is there a chance the eggs are older?
How long has this been happening?
Was there any changes right before it started, in feed or range area or housing or....????

They area laying in the nesting boxes and we collect eggs daily. The problem is if it is an infected hen hoe do I figure out which one? I have had one from the Easter egger and one from one of the brown layers

according to this BYC thread, it can be cottonseed oil in the feed which can cause this problem.

Here's the BYC article on egg conditions. Note several article including this one note greenish yolks from cottonseed oil, not black. Only reference I could find to black was a rotten egg. that reference said it smelled like hydrogen sulfide.
