Help!!! Dog ATTACKED by skunk! 2nd UPDATE post 18

If vets were crooks who were only in it for the money, they'd be doctors.. Human med school is generally accepted to be easier than vet school, and doctors make more money than vets.. Most vets I've known do it because they enjoy it.

Also...as for the vets just trying to get you in to get more money for shots, consider the fact that most states require yearly rabies shots -- not a shot every three years. Most vets these days will tell you that a rabies shot lasts *at least* three years (probably longer), but that you won't be legally considered "up to date" if anything bad happens..

That's not their doing, though...they're vets, not legislators. Making dog laws isn't really in a vet's wheelhouse.

How about maintaining a little decorum for the family about to have to put their beloved pet down?

Sheesh..

. . . still dont care.

I have been following this thread now for a few days. Chicken whisperer I get what you are saying, I know people who hold the same views as you do. Actually I am one of them to a degree...Veterinarians are here to make money, especially bigger city Vets. HOWEVER when we are talking a disease such as Rabies, that, as you know could kill a person, don't you just think that the Vet's advise is not only sound but safe? Why should the OP take a chance. If the OP took the chance and listened to you and nothing happens they are no worse for wear, but if the OP did listen to you and throw caution to the wind and decide to just keep the dog and "wait and see" that would be foolish. Rabies is nothing to be taken lightly. We are talking something deadly to animals and PEOPLE here, not a discussion of fleas or even Parvo.

As my neighbor who is our animal control agent says, "Rabies is not like the flu. You don't get over it." Not worth taking the chance.

Ditto with Jamie the D. And she has her kids to worry about! You couldn't just chance that you kids might not get rabies. You just can't do that.

My comments were directed at the guy who tried to pick ONE statement I made apart.

If you go back and read my posts, you will see all my info is valid and correct.

My compassion for the poor OP and her situation is clearly defined.

I am simply trying to make the point that her son will not get rabies from the dog licking him, without the dog having gone thru the progression of the infection itself and reaching the contagious stage.

You guys need to go back to the beginning and read all the way thru before you accuse me of not being compassionate or stating wrong information.
At NO POINT did I say keep the dog, at NO POINT did I say dont bring it to the vet, all I said was not to live in fear, provide relevant info, and let her make her own choice, based on truth and fact- not wives tales and worry.

PS- for everybody who has posted a reply on this page 5 of this thread, thankyou for trying to discredit my info with your opinions about my opinions on this subject, Im sure the OP found you guys very helpful

*pats* don't worry, not everyone is so willing to jump on other people.. I found your information very useful personally and I'm a bit confused why people decided to jump on you for trying to defend yourself - when you shouldn't have to defend yourself in the first place...

I'm sorry your dog had to pay with their life, OP, but sometimes you just can't risk things... I can understand why you can't take the risk and your choice is right for you and your family. I'm sure she would prefer to be put down over possibly killing her entire family against her own will. ... are the cremated remains of possibly rabies infected dogs safe?... If so, will you have her cremated and buried somewhere special?

Didn't see anyone getting jumped on. Just people willing to give their information and opinions -- just as you did.

In any event this is a really sad situation and one that, hopefully, will teach others. It isn't often you hear of a rabies case like this (or at least I don't). I tend to not really consider Rabies as that much of a threat. There are skunk, raccoon, opossum, fox, coyote, bob cat, bear and cougar living in and around where I live. Oh and bats too, see them frequently. I will definately keep a really close eye out for unusual behavior now that this situation hits so close to home here on BYC.
