Help! My neighbor’s dog somehow jumped the fence and mauled one of our girls!!! She has a nasty wound on her hind right side! I have cleaned it with wound wash liquid, but no clue what I should do, besides trying to pack it with neosporin or something…. She’s in shock right now. But I’m so clueless if the injury is treatable or how best to treat it without hurting her.

The wound doesn’t appear super deep but there is a smal piece of skin hanging off one part, and a couple punctures wounds, but it’s hard to see the whole wound without hurting her. She isn’t bleeding so I don’t think the dog bit anything major, but she panting bad and I’m shock with eyes wide open and dilated.

Any suggestions on what to do? What treatment or medicine should I give her? Should I try finding a avian vet nearby?

Do you see any internal organs in the wound low down? Trim any excess feathers so you can see the wounds. If she has internal organs visible, her ability to survive would be worse. A vet might be best for her if that is the case. I would use saline or wound spray and then keep it coated with plain Neosporin. Keep her separated in a quiet dim space, where it is warm, about 72 degrees. Offer sips of fluids if she is awake. Electrolytes, Gatorade, or water with 1 tsp per cup would be helpful.

Yeah, we moved her to a dog kennel in garage and tried to make her comfy on a pile of clean towels, which the garage is now dark for night time. I went to pet store and bought some antimicrobial hydrogel spray that says it helps relieve pain for wounds as well as another spray to keep would clean.

Besides sugar water and electrolytes, anything else I can give her, especially for the pain?

It looks like the dog was trying to pluck her feathers off very violently, like a dog pulling stuffing from toy, so when pulling her feathers, the dog tore skin and maybe some small chunks from her…. I’ll ask my husband to help check below, but it looks like it’s all just on her hind right.

So I did make some sugar water (no clue on how much sugar to use, but the final product is sweet), and was able to get her to drink several milliliters. She finally starting blinking, but is still mouth breathing and looks in pain….

@Eggcessive gave good advice, treating for shock is primary at this point. Sounds like you got Veterycin Gel, I use that stuff alot on all my animals ... Does seem to help with pain & healing. Neosporin (without the pain relief) is good, keeps the area lubed & healing.

This is from my notes: Pain - Aspirin 1/4tab 2x day or 1 tab baby daily dissolve in 1qt water, bit of honey ... However aspirin is like a anticoagulant, so I'd be hesitant in using.

Yeah, I’m hesitant to give aspirin since it thins the blood. I’m thinking of trying maybe 24 or 48 hours later if we make it that far to help with pain.

The wound wash I have does have benzalkonium chloride and lidocaine so hoping that helped with the pain too.

I’ve also attached photos of stuff I bought at pet store.

The gel spray is what I put on wound after cleaning it with wound wash.

I also bought this stuff to help keep it clean.

But you said not to use neosporin with pain relief??? Cuz that’s what I have and was about to put on her…
