HELP!! DOGS ATTACKED MY SILKIE ROO

he is drinking on his own but i haven't seen him eat. i think he is still in shock though because everytime i get near his cage he freaks out and starts dragging his beak across the ground and walking backwards, it doesnt help that he can see my dogs walking around the room all day but i have no where else to put him because i have a hen who was attacked a week or two ago who is still healing in the cage in my room. hes talking again though so thats a good thing but he didnt crow at all today not even in the morning and thats wierd.

Can you put him in another cage and have both birds in your room too? Don't put them in the same cage. I had 2 chickens attacked at the same time and put them in separate cages in the same room. They would talk to each other and I think it helped them recover.

I live in oregon and there is no tractor supplys around here but there is the grange do you think they would have it?
Call them and ask. Is that where you get your feed and other supplies from? We have Feed Stores in every town down here that carry most of that stuff, its just that TSC is a chain store with regular hours.

I really like the idea of the sheet over the cage for privacy and quiet. Maybe large card board pieces, whatever.

I had this happen (it wasn't my dog) to my cochin pullet about a month ago. I definitely can't stress enough the need for antibiotics. No matter how clean you can get the wound, it won't be clean enough. And, there may be punctures you can't see right now, which are nasty wounds. Once he's calmed down a bit, try to go over every square inch of him to see if you missed anything. You should flush the wounds with very diluted iodine (the color of weak tea, I was told).

My little lady was doing okay with us cleaning out her wounds every other day, but really, really improved dramatically after a course of Penicillin G antibiotics. I'm pretty sure that without it, she would have eventually died. I just got the Penicillin at my Theisens here in town (farm supply store.) It's in a refrigerator case, and it cost me about $9 for a medium-sized bottle. The syringes were cheap too. I gave her once a day subcutaneous (not really very hard, once you get the hang of it) injections for 5 days. I think her dosage was 3 cc's, but you should look it up.

Within a week or so after we started antibiotics, she was back to her feisty self, and her wounds healed super, super fast! As soon as she got enough feathers back to cover the bald spots reasonably well, we put her back out with the other ladies.

Search on this board for dog attack threads...there are a lot of great ones with pictures and advice. Hang in there, and good luck!

ok i went down to the grange and got penicillin G procaine and a few syringe needles and i got 0.1 cc in the syringe and thats been sitting on the counter for a little bit to get to room temp but it has an air bubble is it still ok to use? and im not sure where im supposed to inject it

Tap the side of the syringe while holding it upright. This should release the air bubble. It is ok to use as long as the needle has been kept clean. I give my chickens shots in the breast where there is the most muscle (meat). That is probably best for a Silkie since they are small. If you have a larger chicken with thick legs you can give shots in the thigh. Hope he is doing better.

i'm having trouble finding a muscle on him, i had no idea he was so skinny i can feel the crop and the keel bone
