Some dogs got ahold of the back of my chicken and plucked nearly all the feathers off her rear. She looks like a meat pulp back there now but isnt bleeding badly. What should I do?? I have her isolated in a dog crate with food and water, but how should I treat her?

I had this happen also, Here is what I did, ran water over any wounds just held that part of the chicken under the faucet. squirted betadine on any wounds, put her in a dog crate with electrolytes in the water and her normal food and she recovered in 2 days and I put her back with the flock

Oh lord, this just happened to my black Australorp! Hen ended up in the dog pen. I don't see any wounds, but they plucked her back and rear end pretty good. Does she need pain medication? I'm horrified! I'm worried the others will peck at her bare skin. I'm bringing her in for a couple of nights, poor thing. Should I put anything on her? I think she's the low bird on the totem pole, and I'm very worried for her. How long before the feathers will return?

Separate her from the other chickens. If it's very raw, I normally wash with diluted peroxide. Allow to dry a bit then use neosporn. Allow it to heal over a few days. A chicken saddle to over the crusted wound will help protect her from getting pecked by the others.
If she's getting pecked a lot during the reintroduction, you can ease her in by putting her in an area where they can see each other but not get at each other. That helps a lot with reintroduction.
Also, putting the 'new' chicken in neutral area with 1-2 less aggressive chickens, supervised also seems to help the reintroduction, esp if the other chickens can see the goings on!

Thanks so much for the reply.
She's doing very well. There were no actual bite wounds, they pulled her feathers off, however.
She's in with the other hens, there are only 4 total, and nobody is picking on her, thank God. You can only see her skin when she bends over, and it is looking better every day.
I was going to separate her from the others, but felt the stress of being away from her friends would be worse, being that there are only 4. They're a pretty tight knit group.
We watched her closely after I inspected her for wounds, making sure she could still do what chickens do. By bedtime, she was acting pretty normal, eating, drinking, preening, not panting, interacting with the others.
I prayed real hard that night, and was thankful for the 4 hens that trotted out in the morning. I brought her in to inspect her, and she was quite vocal about being inside without company. I looked her over and offered some arnica, which she wouldn't eat. Reunited her with the other 3 and she's been good ever since. I just hope the feathers come in soon.
I nearly offered the dogs up on Freecycle with a brand new bag of dogfood. This is our first experience with chickens, and I never dreamed how much I would love them.
Kindly,
das Huhnchen
