I wouldn't be surprised. I had to do that with one of our first broody hatched chicks. I was looking at the hatched babies and I saw a chick that had most of the shell kicked off but was still stuck in the outer membrane. I ripped it open and out it popped.

I'm going to just have to leave it alone for a few days.

Oh my goodness!!! Definitely don’t be rough (which I know you know), coconut oil is a great idea. I think just keep an eye on it and let all keep our fingers crossed!!

I never had one that bad but when I dropped an egg that was covered with cracks, I used liquid bandage and coated all the cracks with it. The chick hatched fine but mine didn't have shell parts missing.

Oh my goodness, so sorry this happened!

I hope that it pulls through for you! No matter what you decide to use to moisten the membrane, be sure to gently reapply it occasionally to keep it moist. Antibiotic ointment without pain reliever is a good one for assists that are expected to be really long because it lasts longer. Coconut oil has always been my go to but if it's not reapplied often enough it does harden. I'm so glad someone shared the ointment trick with me this year.
