I have two Pekin ducklings, Duke & Wallie. I got them when they were day olds. They are now 3 weeks old. I had them outside in a crate 3 days ago and Wallie was attacked by an otter when I turned my back for 5 minutes. His thigh was bit and cut in two small places and one big gash that was bleeding.
I immediately cleaned the wound, put polysporin on it, and wrapped it in medical gauze/wrap. I've been cleaning it every day as well. It looks a lot better today and he has been standing on it again and walks around. It's difficult for him and he limps but he is getting much better.
Does anyone know if there is something/anything else i can do or get for him? Is there anything I should look out for?!
Cannot afford vet care.
Thanks!

Be sure to keep your babies out of harms way, where were they when this otter attacked? sounds like you have done great in caring for your duckling, keep the flies away most of all because if they lay their eggs in the wound maggots are something else to deal with.
If keeping him inside which I hope you are I wouldn't cover the wound let air get to it and be careful not to use anything with pain killer in it that ends in caine deadly to waterfowl. maybe get some poultry vitamins to add to his water to help hi m through the stress. Sounds like Wallie is on the mend. and

I had them set up near the water, we were about to go for a swim when I ran inside to grad a towel and then it happened. I have them inside now. Thanks!

My goodness that was a bold otter. Glad Wallie made it out alive. keep us updated on how he is doing. sweet pics too. Oh and if this is a pond etc be aware that snapping turtle will also eat or severely injure young ducklings and adults ducks too.

Thanks, it was a lake but I have seen snappers in it so I'll be sure to keep an eye out. It was a very bold otter, I had to grab it off of Wallie.

My goodness that was a bold otter. thank goodness you weren't bit they have very sharp teeth. , and the snappers come up underneath and grab, we have had quite a few come on BYC this year with emergency about their ducks/ducklings being attacked by snapping turtles. Keep us updated on Wallie.
