We ordered from Meyers for the first time. We've been raising chicks for 3 years and have never had any issues with deaths in our brooder setup. Ordered 46 from Meyers, shippes Monday afternoon & picked up at post office wednesday at lunch. 3 arrived dead in the box, 2 more died over night and another by lunch Thursday. They gave us a refund for those immediately. Since then 7 more have died! We're up to almost 30% dead of our order! I'm really upset. It's mostly breed that keeps dying. The temp is fine, they're eating and drinking, no signs of cocci or other chick illnesses. Giving them chick saver. I'm pulling my hair out and super frustrated. I don't think I'll ever order mail chicks again.

The same thing is happening with Tracor Supplys chicks. Theirs come in the mail too but yours did came in an acceptable time, so..... It is starting to sound like the post offices fault to me. Maybe they are rough housing the packages, some kind of computer sorter is causing the problems, xray machine, nuclear scanner, who knows what they do.

Don't beat yourself up. Chicks have been successfully shipped in the mail for years, except for this year.

The only time I had a chick die before was in a group of leghorns i got fromTSC last year. 2 just keeled over a day or so after I bought them.

Only problem I ever had was with mail order. I always try and go in person to see what I’m paying for.

Late last year when we ordered our laying hens from Meyer Hatchery (2 Buff Orp, 4 RIRs and 2 Barred Rocks) they came on time but there was a snake in the box that flew out of the box in the Post Office! I don’t know if they ever found it. It killed one Buff and almost killed a RIR but we revived the RIR. I called Meyer to tell them what happened and the lady said she’s been there 8 years and never heard of such a thing. Weird occurrence I’m sure. We ended up losing all but 2 because of my deaf dog Hannah who got into the brooder when we were culling meat chickens. I was devastated. She somehow pushed the door open and got into the room, moved the weighted cover and got into the brooder. It was so sad. So, now we are super careful. She’s learning to behave around the grown ones, but cannot be trusted around chicks. Our Border Collie is also too aggressive with the babies so neither one are allowed near them when they are young without strict supervision. Again, this is a learning experience and sometimes hard to bear. Even so, I believe it’s worth it in the end.
