HELP! EMERGENCY! How to stop bleeding!

I hope you got the bleeding stopped and your gal is on the mend. I read here about something called Clotisol. I will be buying some to keep in my chicky first aid kit. I know that alum, used for making pickles, also aids in clotting.

Hugs to you and your gal!

Well, I was able to get the bleeding to stop the first night and she made it through to the morning, but then I had to remove the bandage because the only way I had been able to stop it from bleeding was to bandage it really tight and I was worried about it cutting off the circulation to her foot.

So, yesterday morning I took off the bandage and tried to quickly hit the wound with some antibiotic ointment and re-bandage it with a looser bandage. It did not bleed at first, but before I could get the new bandage on it blew out again and sprayed blood everywhere.

I couldn't get it to stop this time and it just kept soaking through the gauze, so I called around to the vets in my area until I found one that was willing to take a look.

My hubby bundled her up and drove her over to the vet and they were able to stop the bleeding by using a tourniquet and stitching her leg up. Then they bandaged the wound and sent her home with antibiotics and instructions not to let her swim for at least a week (she is gonna hate that!)

The only cruddy thing is that they sent home antibiotic PILLS. Ever try giving a goose a pill?

I even tried crushing it up and dissolving it in water but she just closed off her throat and spit it all out. I called the vet back and asked if Tylan 50 would work because I already keep that on hand and it is much easier to give a shot. She said that it was actually a lot better than what she gave me (she just did not have that on-hand) so instead of the pills she'll be getting a shot twice a day to ward off infection from her cut.

So far the bleeding has been held at bay and she seems to be doing well. She is currently enjoying her own private, deluxe accommodations in our garage so that she cannot get to the kiddie pools and get her foot wet.

She is such a good girl, too. Through all of the poking and prodding and whatnot that went on from the time I brought her inside to try to see where she was bleeding right through the Dr stitching her up with no anesthetic, she never once bit me, my husband, or my sister. Even though we were doing stuff that had to hurt a lot and her head was free the whole time so it would have been easy for her to give us a nip.

She did, however, reach around my hubby's arm while he was holding her down and bite the vet who was doing the stitching.

These Pilgrim geese truly are sweethearts, though. Whenever I tell people I have geese they always shudder and say, "Oh, I hate geese, they are so mean...one chased me when I was a kid." Or something along those lines. I just laugh because these guys are just the sweetest, gentlest things you can imagine.

This one is now my most expensive bird, since I paid $15 plus shipping for her as a baby, and now $60 for the vet bill. She had better get cracking on laying those golden eggs!

Glad to hear it it working.

My concern if the Tylan. I thought it was only for respiratory infections? Everyone out there am I wrong?

Can you hide the pill in a favorite treat?

Tylan is a good antibiotic for respiratory infections, that's true. But, I checked with the vet when I could not get her to take the pills and she said that it was an excellent antibiotic for use in birds and that it would be even better than the pills she gave.

She only gave the pills because they figured that I wouldn't want to do injections (I sent my husband to the vet with the goose so I did not get to talk to her).

Hiding it in a treat is no good because she does not eat treats very well. Stubborn geese are bigger than the chickens but they only take tiny nibbles of anything you give them. If I found a treat large enough to fit the pill the goose would just nibble it apart if she took it at all (they prefer grass and the flock pellets to treats).
