I would have to say that predators are relentless, no matter WHAT we do. Simply building a fortress coop will only keep them at the edge of the fortress. When it develops a chink, as it eventually will, they will come. That is the problem with all fortresses.

Along with a strong coop, layers of defense are your best bet. Everything from electric fences out at the edges of the property to traps and guns may be in order. Dont rely on just one method, but have a multifaceted approach.

Just chicken wire buried will NOT work the coons are nasty little buggers and will just pull the chickens out the top or go through the wire - we lost 5 a couple of weeks ago to this our wire is buried down 2 feet and then out two feet and the coons didnt even bother to dig. Go with electric or hardware cloth or lock them up secure at night

You know I am going to say this and then I'm gonna try real hard not to say any more. Chickens were made by God or Mother Nature, depending on your viewpoint, I guess, to be food animals. If you all are unwilling to build a coop strong enough to keep predators out, or think before you have chickens at all, depending on where you live, then you have no business killing predators who only see an easy meal. WE do not kill predators here...we have only killed two coons in five years and that was not us, it was the trapper we hired to help us cause we had a serious problem for a while. Yes, you can build a coop or enclosure that will keep predators out, and burying the fence certainly helps. And trying to kill all predators that kill your chickens is not only pretty much useless, as they will be replaced, but also unnecessary. WE have lost some favorite chickens but keep on with keeping poultry with the realization that we will certainly lose some now and then. The predators are simply trying to survive. Man certainly doesn't make it easy for them.

Having dogs is still one of the best sources of deterring predators I can think of.
I have a Jack Russell that will raise four kinds of hell if anything comes near the yard not to mention she will tree. She recently found a snake and raised the alarm and it wasn't even alive.
I have several dogs so mostly critters avoid my area anyway.

Good response.

Sorry, I don't agree that man's place "in the scheme of things" is to make it difficult for other creatures to survive. Either you or them? That sounds a bit extreme. Just play the game, and play fair. .

Oh for pete's sake. Spend your time and money building a decent chicken coop/house/pen whatever, rather than having a BIG GAME HUNT every night! Think and plan first, then buy the chicks.
