Help figuring out why my chick died!

Hi,

I'm brand new to this, just hatched my first quail chicks 3-4 days ago. Had one die the day before yesterday. It came out the wrong end of its shell, seemed weak and uncoordinated from the start, and its yolk was only partially absorbed. I was sad but not too surprised to find it dead under the electric hen one evening.

However, I've just gone to check on the chicks and found another one dead - and all 6 of my remaining chicks seemed healthy to me, so I want help trouble shooting what happened, in case its something I'm doing wrong, I don't want any more to die on me!

This second chick was also found dead under the electric hen - I don't know if thats significant, it seems like any chick feeling poorly would seek warmth? But there's that. Then there's the fact that 3 days ago -w hen they were all newly hatched - the first night I put them into the brooder - several of them got cold in the night. I think the electric hen was not warm enough for them. I found most of them scattered around the cage laid over on their sides - thought they were dead at first! Stuck them back in the incubator for an hour and they revived and seemed fine. But I wonder if there was some lingering damage from that incident? BTW I've since got a heat lamp which is keeping an area of the brooder at the recommended temperature (95 degrees F) and they are doing much better at night now. But I kept the electric hen in there as they seem to like to congregate under it.

Any and all advice welcomed. I'd like to keep my remaining chicks alive and healthy!

It honestly isn't unusual to lose a quail chick or two. Most times I've hatched coturnix/Japanese quail we've lost one or two (usually the one our daughter has declared is her favourite)! Some just don't seem to recover from hatching.

I'm glad your others are doing well. They grow so fast - enjoy them.

Thank you, that is very reassuring. Since I'm new at this, I'm very nervous that I'm going to mess it up! And I too have a kid - a 5 year old who is very attached to the little quail already!
