Hi everyone! Just signed up as a member, although I've been a guest for about a year. My husband and I started last year with some freshly hatched chicks...my hubby watched a video and "sexed" 6 chicks; 3 for my neighbor, and 3 for us. Long story short, they all turned out to be boys...and we are not allowed to have boys!!

We found a good home for them, but we are now looking at hatcheries for a couple of chicks or started pullets, but the minimum orders are so high...and I would love to get them right away so we dont have to wait all summer for eggs. I'd be willing to go get them, but not much seems available right now! We'd love another Americauna and then a silky or something fun. Any suggestions as to places to buy or breed? Would appreciate any help!

My pet chicken offers small orders. They have heat packs included with the small orders. I personally have not ordered from them but know folks that have and are pleased.they are also the only hatchery that I have seen offering sexed bantams.

I think they are worth a look. For my area the minimum is six this time of year.

Happy chick hunting.

If you want eggs this summer you'll need year old hens. Might find 6-8 month old pullets. Check your local craigslist. Other than that wait for feed store chick days and pick up pullet chicks this spring. You wont have eggs until they start laying in fall.

You could check your local feed stores to include Tractor Supply. You can buy individual chicks from them and most feed stores will even put an order in with other orders to get the exact amount you want.

Thanks! I checked with Farm and Fleet, however, they told me their chicks are not sexed. They also won't be coming in until mid March, which would mean no eggs all summer (IF they ended up being pullets). Checked Craig's List to no avail, however, haven't checked with Tractor Supply yet.

Murray McMurray offers started pullets. No minimum. I got some and was very pleased with them. They offer both 4 week old, and 24 week old. Bigger breed choice with the 4 week olds.
Purely Poultry also sells started pullets. Got a couple from them, and was very pleased with what I got.
