Chickens are wonderful and entertaining. I have to agree with previous posts that the Rhode Island Red is a great breed to start with. But as stated by lazy gardener, birds with smaller combs are best for colder climates as they are least affected by frostbite (larger combs dissipate heat better in warmer climates).

Good, your researching and joined BYC. That's your first step in raising chickens success! Besides access to the internet I also recommend getting books to have on hand. "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens" should be a good one to start with. You can never have too much information at your fingertips.

Where your going to house them is going to be the most important concern. Make sure they have plenty of room, shelter from weather, and MOST important: protection from predators. Don't skimp on quality when it comes to their feed.

All my chicks were from the same hatchery! Picked them up the same day!
The red coloured chicks became aggressive with my flock and had to be rehomed!
I was told by the hatchery, that usually Reds can become aggressive and also Hybrid layers.
I just sold two Leghorns and an ISSA brown that were totally mean hens.
All were hatched and raised together from day one.
Now that the reds and Hybrids are gone everyone gets along!
