Help for smell?

I haven't been able to find the DE yet in my area of middle Tennessee, so until I do I have been using PDZ that I found at Tractor Supply. It was in the horse section. You just sprinkle it around on the ground and it neutralizes the smell. My run is 10x10 and I have 12 chickens. they are not in the run all the time, they free range during the day, but they do run in an out frequently because I still keep their feed and water in there. Every 3-5 days I'll sprinkle around 3 or 4 handfuls. I don't really have a schedule, just do it when I think about it. I haven't noticed an odor yet. I do want to try the DE because it is supposed to be good for mites. I checked one of the girls yesterday and didn't see any, but I want to make sure they don't get any. I think preventing them is easier than treating for them.

can't stand smelly coop and run either! we have been getting a LOT of rain and our run is a hoop so the outer edges of run get wet....and stinky! we do have de but it gets washed away! as soon as I get the $$ I am considering putting down rock, then sand and de to help with keeping stuff dry and smell free...we have been using de in coop too, but it got wet too! UGHHHHHHH
keeping an eye on this thread to get more ideas!

edited at 12:15...just went outside and added a bunch of DE to the run...helped a LOT...can't smell it now...now if I can get the wood shavings to dry in the coop and then add more de I think we will be ok...or at least better!

We went with the crusher run for the bottom of our run and it's been stench free :) On the negative side though, our girls have ate every living plant in their run, so with the gravel, its not exactly loaded with vegetation for them to enjoy... javascript:insert_text('

We have sand and a bit of mulch in our runs, and I throw a few handfuls of DE in with the sand. Helps dry things out. I also scoop out all the runs every day with a bucket, whisk broom and kitty litter scoop. Doesn't take long, keeps the smell and flies down.

oldchickenlady, I get my food grade DE from a Perma-Guard dealer over in Brentwood.

For those interested, here is the Perma-Guard site.
