Do not know what happened but the tiny duck did not make it.

It could have been whatever killed the other too...they may have been ill and the momma duck knew it or died as well? Sounds like you had done everything you could....it is sad to see such a cute little creature die though

looking at the pics,it looks like something was wrong with it from the start (its head looks squished on one side swollen on the other?) at least it died in a warmloving home, and not alone on the lake

It was a wood duck duckling, not mallard.

I thought it looked a bit different than my mallards ...glad you wrote that for reference
