Went out 30 mins ago to greet chicks and give them a snack (sweet potatoes raisins and broccoli) found one of my Orpingtons dead. We have several different chicks like black asian, ameraucana, Rhode Island Red have 21 chick the age of 24 weeks to 28 weeks we have raised since a few days old. This is our first loss. What do I need to look for to make sure my other chicks don’t die too? She looks very fat and healthy.

Sorry that you lost your pullet The best way to find a cause of death is to keep the body cold, but not frozen, and send or take it to your state poultry vet for a necropsy. Here is a list of the state poultry vets to contact in the morning:

To start I would check all of them out as to crop condition when roosting for the night. They should be full. And again early in the morning to see if they are empty and not impacted or mushy.

Crop issues seem to be one of the first signs something might be wrong.

Necropsy is also very helpful to know if you are dealing with something that might just affect that bird or possibly all of them.
