Happy all. I believe my baby has the pox. She has some white spots on one side of her comb. What can I do? Can I order some medicine? I want to avoid the vet, since I just spent $1600 on my chickens there two months ago. I have two pet chickens.
(Back info...I had 4, 2 died. 1 was an infection and the other was marecks. Normally our city home does not have rodents, but this summer we do. It is my belief the dirty rats brought disease to my yard. Ugh! We very had the chickens over a year with no problem until the rats showed up.I am no longer free-ranging ) This summer has been frustrating. Thanks for your help.

Pox is a virus. It will run it's course in about 4-6 weeks. It's transmitted by mosquitoes. It will get worse before it gets better. Controlling mosquito population can help keep it away. Otherwise there's vaccines for it too.

I read on line it can kill chickens. Is that true? I just have to let it run its course?
It can kill if it's the wet version which is in the mouth and throat, or if it interferes with a bird being able to see and eat. Antibiotics will do nothing for the pox, but may help if there are secondary infections.

I've only seen it in my turkeys here. It never spread to my chickens. I haven't seen it in years since I made sure to dump standing water every day or every few days.
