Help: Getting rid of Raccoons

Half inch hardware cloth, closed up coops at night, electric fencing, live traps set at all times. Trapped coons dispatched - released coons will return from as much as 30 miles and will have been educated. Trap/release of predators = educated trap shy predators.

1089 havahart trap from home depot for $45.Have caught atleast 13 coons so far.Only issue is a bigger coon bent the trip plate and bent the door trying to get out.

I've been having good results with the Duke Dogproof traps, catching both coons and possums. They're pretty easy to set up as long as you anchor them solidly.I chain mine to a fence post or other immovable object.

If you want to humanely keep raccoon's out of your yard, garage etc. without traps or poisons, you could try using Electronic Pest Repellents.

These work by using an Infrared Motion Sensor that blasts a High Pressure Ultrasonic Sound Wave that is undetectable to the human ear.

They are a cheaper alternative to cage traps and you wont have to worry about catching your neighbors cat's with them LOL!

You can normally find them on amazon for around $20 bucks http://amzn.to/1nEvpaG

Use 1/2" hardware cloth, well secured, over every opening. Chicken wire is useless. Think Ft. Knox! Raccoons can open many latches, and big dogs can also tear through many things. Live traps are good for raccoon, and possums, but it's only legal to relocate on your property, or on private land within your county with the landowner's permission. Don't trap if you won't shoot!!! Moving wild critters to unfamiliar turf is cruel, in addition to being illegal. Mary

Raccoons will never stop killing if in the area. Relocating them in most cases is death for them anyways. Sounds harsh but I trap mine then a quick shot to the head. Along with a proper burial. My chickens are my Business I sell eggs chicks etc... So if it's a choice between supporting the family and a raccoons life that's no choice at all for me.

I just got rid of a huge one that killed an older laying hen the first night it got in, and killed my favorite rooster the second night it got in. Used a medium sized trap from Tractor Supply baited with two eggs, First attempt it rolled the trap, so second night anchored it down and was successful in catching it. Once trapped, you have to get rid of them quickly or they can shred a trap that is not well made to get out.

I temporarily relocated my birds to another building to keep it from having any more chicken dinners...

I don't relocate them, I kill them. If you relocate them, you are quite likely dumping the problem on some one else. Fortunately, state laws where I live allow the owner to kill any animal, including protected species, if you can catch them marauding your livestock.
