HELP! Goat got into Chicken Grower/finisher and possibly in labor OR Bloat?

How is your goat now? I would be really concerned about entertoxemia., Where I used to live entero was so common and deadly that if a goat got into the feed or was really off we treated for entero first and then worried about what else may be wrong. The high incidence of entero seemed to be related to the pH of our soil. Survival rates with untreated entero are not good. Bloat can occur with or without entero, but bloat and abdominal pain are signs of entero. So what is your goat doing now?

She seems fine, other than working on lining up her kids to give birth.

I've been palpating her stomach and her rumen feels fine, she's uncomfortable, but being THAT pregnant is bound to do that.

Her poops are normal, she's peeing a LOT, but everything else seems fine.

For some reason I thought your doe was current on her CD & vaccine. Is she not? If not, then I'd definitely get her a dose of anti toxin.

Just a comment. CD/T vaccine is not 100% effective. Goats can and do get entero even though they are current on their shots. The vaccine greatly reduces the incidence of entero but it does not eliminate it.

I'm not honestly sure what her vaccinations are.

I think the man ran a 'naturalist' breeding program, like they did with the kiko goats. He put them in an environment where they had everything they needed in terms of food and fresh water and then only bred the healthiest animals (Or the ones who needed the least intervention). That's the impression I got, at least a little bit, but he never said outright anything about vaccines. I know he said he just gave them SOMETHING (though I don't remember the word.)

He told me he wormed once a year, if that. That I remember for sure.

Google made it seem like vaccination was optional. :T Woops...

Will a double dose of vaccine hurt her?

Activated charcoal will work in a pinch, you can buy it at the drug store. This has saved my pygmy doe and was recomended by an experienced goat person because I did not have CD Antitoxin. I was told to follow the adult dosage. I keep CD Antitoxin on hand now, just in case my goats get in the chicken feed or too much of anything their not used to for that matter. Goats go down fast.

Well, it's been Two days since she ate any chicken food.

Is it safe to say she's in the clear this time? She didn't eat a LOT, from what I can tell. I don't offer my chickens completely unlimited food all day round.

If she hasn't showed any symptoms related to bloat or entero, she won't now, two days later. You don't need to worry.

Like I mentioned on my first post, if you aren't sure of her vaccination status, absolutely vaccinate her. CDT is a core goat vaccine and saves goatie lives. Because you will need to assume she has never been vaccinated, you need to actually give her two doses total. One dose initially, then another two weeks later. Make sure to read the bottle carefully. A vaccine is also known as a toxoid, and it will say so on the bottle.

If you got any other goats from the same place, vaccinating them too would be a good idea!
