Congrats!!! The brooder temp should be anywhere from 85-95. 111 is definitely too warm. I hang my heat lamp over the brooder - be creative. That way you can adjust it as needed. When they first hatch, I find that a soft towel works well and if they are cold, they can tunnel in. I take it out after the first night/day and they are usually just fine. Don't worry about the umbilical stuff either. That will normally dry up.

My ducklings didn't eat for the first 2 days...just drank a little, then they got hungry and ATE so i wouldn't worry

try to keep the humidity up in the incubator and they will do fine...leave them in there to dry (if possible).
As for the brooder you are correct, just raise/lower until the spot right under the lamp is 100ish...leave enough "cool" area so they can get away from it if they are hot.

Oh ya and stop worrying! (Ha I should tell myself that!)

My kids say the brooder is staying steady at 100.0 F now...
whew...
and the little one is chirping up a storm!
the others are in the incubator, and will be hatching soon!
and we can't wait to see if any more are coming after that!

The problem with the incubator is that it has an electric automatic Turner, which is metal flat racks with plastic/rubber prong things to hold each egg... and I have eggs due next week in there too...
so these are out of the turner, but the turner is still IN there and moving...
some eggs are in the center few inches on the wire, and 9 are in an egg carton lid which is sitting on the three metal things on the one side of the turner... which is of course still moving!

I don't want to leave a chick in there too long and get his leg cut off! the first chick kept jumping into the turner... scary!

Oooh. Thats a tough one. I wouldnt have put eggs setting on different dates with an automatic turner. well, I do that all the time, LOL, but I have a seperate bator I put the hatching ones in at day 18. I think I would turn the turner off. I was going to say take it right out and hand turn the eggs, but that would mess your humidity all up. some people never ever turn they're eggs... not turning for a day or two wont kill them.
