That's a great price for the Brinsea.  They are mucho dinero up here.

Great info! $85 is quite a bit but I know for that m, it's actually a great price. I can say it's my birthday gift since it's coming up on the 26th lol (although I have justified my chicks and many other things as "birthday gifts" to my husband. He just rolls his eyes lol)

Hi Flocktastic, I'm Linda from Sonora, CA. I have a 250 bulb with a deflector also. One day I checked it and the bulb was hanging onto the silver end cap, which was still screwed in, by a wire. Now for safety I wrap the whole bulb and deflector with small hardware cloth and it's wired on. The bulb can only drop 1/2 inch if it did come loose. I think that's how they start fires, the bulbs get so hot that they separate from the end cap. You'll be able to tell by watching your chicks if they are too hot or not. The red bulb doesn't effect they're eyes like a regular one does I read. As the weather warms change to a smaller wattage.
I always keep 1 TBS. of Braggs organic unpasteurized apple cider vinegar to 1 gal of water to all my chickens. Don't use a metal container for water if you do. I take it myself.

Heat lamp bulbs can start fires in other ways. Dust and down gather on them and can burst into flame. I had a regular light bulb - 60 watts - in the coop. It's just there so that during the long nights of winter I have a light to do evening chores. One night Ken and I went out and I flipped the light on. We'd been out there for a bit when a tiny wisp of smoke rose up from the light. Yeah, like that.

A heat lamp doesn't have to fall and come into complete contact with a surface to start fires.
