This is Jessi, Im back! Had to run after my 1st post.
Of course this little guy pulled this 5 mins before I had to leave to pick up my new miniature paint horse. Thank G Kelly was here!!!

Thank you all very much for the info. He has really perked up. Not sure what it is--Im going to read all your posts.

He was in a pen with his brother, fresh crumbles, water and fresh chick sized grit. I have been tossing them some 5 grain scratch the last few days as a treat in the mornings.
I think that they were maybe spilling all the grit and losing it in the deep shavings. The grit cup was empty and filled with shavings when I checked his brother.
We have him separated in a pen with no shavings, and only some grit and water at the moment.
Going to keep an eye on him and add a few crumbles later.

I want to see if his crop empties....anyone know how long that may take? Is that a good idea to withhold food?

Anyway, going to read what I missed and see what I can learn.

This was sudden.
He is wormed with ivermectin....I think that kills everything...Im going to look up gapeworm too.

His crop felt pretty full and gritty. Could have maybe been that grain?

Can they get choked from bolting down food--- I know this is a horse thing. They can get "choke" from bolting down food and it gets stuck.

Glad to hear he is doing better, I would withold food until at least this evening maybe even tomorrow morning. Check his crop often to see if it has gone down some. I'm not really sure how long it takes to empty. Keep us posted, we are rootin for the little guy!

oh yes they can.
I have a blue oegb that ate to fast and could not breath, i had act fast, but water to moisten the food in his throat and message it to go down, then the next day he did it again this time i had too get food out of his throat, had to push up and pull out what i could then make him swallow.

Then 2 days later his girlfriend did it, but when i noticed it she was on the floor, i went crazy doing what i could but as soon as i got most food out she was already gone.

What happened was i was putting there food in a bowl and was getting stuck because they were taking too much at once, acting like they have not eaton. so i had stop the bowl and just put there food on a plate, that way they could not pick up so much at once.

It really sounds like the same thing was happing to yours today.

It sounds as though he ate too much grit ...
Cut out the grit and cut out the scratch while you have separated in a pen (outside they can usually find their own grit > too much can cause problems)

Im going to keep him in the separate pen, add a little shavings in there later and if his crop goes down quite a bit, I will sprinkle some crumbles on the floor so that he has to find them.

Maybe offer his some fruit...think I have a juicy pear here.


I have read on here before that if they have a crop impaction, they can have fowl smelling breath

-----but seriously-- I think it was a little rank, and then I realized that I had nothing to compare to.
Im curious to smell the rest now. Off to the coop! Wish me luck!

Or give him a piece of tomatoo and apple cider viniger in his water, This will him digest the grain or food build up in his crop,
