Ok. Deep breath. Official lockdown isn't until Friday. Yet just now while gazing longing at the incubator I noticed a pip! Little guy is working like crazy and peeping up a storm. I quickly took out the turner, filled up the water reservoirs and added a couple wet sponges. Should all go well for my early one? How is starting lockdown early going to effect the others?
Just a side note I suspected something early on with this particular egg. I think maybe one of my girls possibly had sat on it a couple days before it was collected hence the early hatch. Darn big fluffy Cochins hiding eggs on me.

I think you are handling things beautifully. IF it is fully developed and just had a couple days incubation before you knew, then there's no reason to think that it shouldn't go well. You are only a couple days from planned lockdown, so as long as your air cells are all a good size, going into lockdown early shouldn't make too much of a difference. At least you had an idea something was up for it early and it isn't a total shock...lol
Good luck and you have to share pics and progress reports!

Thanks so much for the reassurances. That's what I love about this forum! Sometimes you just need someone else to say "calm down, it's okay". Lol. Do you think it will be okay to take the little fella out as soon as it's dry? Technically the others won't be in true lockdown anyway. I haven't incubated eggs in a couple years and have never dealt with a chick having to be alone in a brooder. It'll need lots of extra TLC!

Yes. As a matter of fact, I remove my chicks during hatch. (I'm not a hands off hatcher...lol) Oh, he/she's going to be loud and want lots of attention...lol My first hatch was a failure with the exception of one. He quickly became a pet...lol If he wasn't out with us, he wasn't happy. You could try a little stuffed animal or a little mirror until he gets some friends.

By the way if all goes well it's name will be Earl. As in Earl E. Bird!
Ha! Cute.

Meet Earl E. Bird! I guess next step is fluffing him up and cleaning the bator? The rest technically go into lockdown tomorrow.

Really well so far. Moved it to brooder with a small stuffed animal. Offered water and food. But it's mainly resting. Of course melting my heart by wanting to sit in my hand and staring up at me! Keep telling him to just wait a couple days and he'll have some friends to play with.

Just a quick question. Yesterday I candled in anticipation of official lockdown and noticed another baby had pipped internally. It's been 24hrs and no external pip so far. How long does this process usually take. I'm sitting on my hands and trying to stay busy but this is driving me nuts! Earl needs a playmate.

By the way he/she is doing very well!
